Dementia Stages


What to expect

 

Early stage

·      Mild memory loss and confusion

·      Frustrated by changes

·      Difficulties with recall of recent activity

 

Moderate stage

·      Forgetting names, may call people by other names

·      Difficulty with recall of commonly used objects

·      Difficulty expressing thoughts & completing tasks

·      Sleep pattern changes

 

Late stage

·      Severe memory loss

·      Difficulty with ambulation

·      Difficulties recognizing family members

 

 Each stage may be painful for caregivers & families

 

How to cope…


·      Provide a brief explanation but don’t scold

·      Reminiscence using photos and personal items to travel to the time they are in

·      Personalize each moment but don’t take it personally

·      Share your experiences & remember you are not alone!
